Video Games are Not so Bad for Your Kids, After All…

For all those parents who admonish their kids for sticking to their gaming consoles, computer screens or cell phones for playing games all day, here is some news which might help cheer you up!
Though gaming has always come in for a lot of criticism from almost all quarters for being a sedentary activity and for ruining the kids’ eyes besides, of course, creating a lot many other problems, researchers at the Queensland Institute of Technology have come up with interesting findings which go contrary to the popular belief.

Gaming Vs Television For kids

While watching television  can actually turn your child (or, even you!) into a couch potato, researchers now have conclusive evidence to support that playing interactive games like Angry Birds can be good for them!

Allowing your kids screen time is not necessarily a sedentary activity depending on what they’re doing.
Angry Birds
Kids aged 2-5 years were studied to know for sure the effect of playing games on their mental and physical growth. These kids were segregated into two groups depending upon the activities they indulged in.
Category #1. Passive watchers, and
Category #2. Active players.
Active experiences can refer to content that stimulates them either physically or mentally. It turns out video games can stimulate kids both mentally and physically, and therefore are probably a better option, at least according to this study, than television.
Some games require light to moderate physical activity, while others require children to interact with the game.
Dr Penny Sweetser, who was actively involved in this experiment, told The Border Mail that playing interactive games like these can help improve the cognitive skills of the children which may also help them improve their academic performance later.
Now, that I’m sure, sounds like music to ears of most parents reading this. Am I right?
This should not be taken to mean that allowing your kids to play Angry Birds ad, of late, Temple Run all day is going to benefit them!
You have to make sure to help the kids opt for games which ACTUALLY help improve their cognitive skills ad also keep a watch over the maximum screen time you allow them.
Games which glorify violence have recently been in the line of fire, especially in the wake of shootouts at US schools. And as parents, you need to keep a careful watch over what your child is watching or playing!

Conclusion

As a parent, do you agree that playing games could actually help sharpen your kids’ reflexes and make them brighter?
If you do not subscribe to that, would you at least admit that they make a better choice than watching television?
