What Sets New PC Games Apart from Older Versions

The next generation of consoles will be arriving soon and that’s good news for all gamers, whether they play on consoles or on their PCs. Over the last few years we’ve seen incremental improvements in graphics and physics in PC games and some amazing leaps forward in game design from PC-focused developers. When the next generation arrives, the baseline for cross-platform games will improve and that’s something everyone will benefit from.
If you’re just getting into PC gaming, you may be wondering what’s worth buying and what isn’t. Can you jump into the Hitman series with Hitman Absolution, or should you play Hitman: Codename 47, Silent Assassin and Blood Money first? Can you enjoy Mass Effect 3 if you haven’t played 1 and 2? What about the Arma series? Is it best to wait for Arma III or is Arma 2 still worth playing?

Old vs. New PC Games

Unless you’re playing a heavily story-focused RPG series such as The Witcher, it’s usually perfectly fine to jump into a game series partway through. Most modern PC games feature standalone stories and anything that happened in the previous games will be explained well enough for you to understand what’s going on.

New PC games usually offer:
becoe
•           Vastly improved graphics, physics and sound
•           Improved and refined control systems
•           Better stability on modern operating systems
•           More active multiplayer communities

If you’re on a tight budget, picking up older games during sales is a good way to build your Steam or Origin gaming library and you will find no shortage of mods and user-generated content for those games. However, if you want to experience the best that PC gaming has to offer, you should try a new PC game such as Crysis 3, the classic strategy Total War: Shogun 2 – Fall of the Samurai, or the recent Tomb Raider reboot. These games all show off the power of the PC in different ways and will keep you entertained for a long time to come.

That’s not to say that older PC games are bad. In fact, some older PC games still have thriving online communities. There are many people who prefer Civilization III and Civilization IV to the far newer Civilization V, even with the Gods and Kings expansion. Civilization III was released back in 2001, but you can still find multiplayer games today.

The modding community keeps older games alive. The Restored Content Mod for Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II fixes a lot of bugs and adds content that was missing from the game. Other popular games, such as the Deus Ex series, have high-resolution texture mods which bring their graphics up to date, keeping the game alive for newer generations of players. This makes it worth revisiting older titles, but you shouldn’t let nostalgia prevent you from enjoying what the latest games have to offer.
